Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894) was a Scottish novelist, essayist, poet, and travel writer whose work has become a lasting part of English literature. Born in Edinburgh, he trained as an engineer before turning to writing. His travels and lifelong struggle with poor health shaped both his life and his work. Stevenson is best known for Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and the novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, stories celebrated for their suspense, vivid characters, and moral complexity. He spent his final years in Samoa, where he was known locally as Tusitala, meaning “the teller of tales.”
